Why am I being contacted?

We have contacted you as you have taken part in either one or two waves of the Horizons study. As a valued member of the study, we are asking you to complete a short online survey so we can keep our records up to date. As a thank you for this, you will immediately receive a £5 e-gift voucher.

What is the Horizons study?

Horizons is an important study following a representative sample of more than 10,000 young people who were in Year 11 in the 2020/21 school year across England. The study aims to follow your cohort as you progress through your education and beyond, with a particular focus on understanding how the COVID-19 pandemic shapes your The study is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). Who is carrying out the research?

The study is led by University College London (UCL) and the Sutton Trust, and supported by the UK Government’s Department for Education, the Office for Students, and the Independent Schools Council. Verian is conducting the survey fieldwork (see below).

Who is Verian?

Verian is the the organisation collecting your data. Verian is bound by the Market Research Society (MRS) Code of Conduct – a set of agreements that ensure research is conducted in an ethical and safe manner. Further information about Verian can be found at www.veriangroup.com.

How did you get my details?

When we first invited you to take part in the study, we either used your address from the National Pupil Database kept by the UK Government’s Department for Education, or we invited your school to participate and they sent you an invitation directly. We are now using the contact information you have provided us with when you have taken part in previous surveys or data collection updates.

What will happen to the information that is collected?

All the information we collect as part of this research will be held securely and treated confidentially in accordance with the Data Protection Act 2018 and General Data Protection Regulation.

Data Protection Information

The UCL Data Protection Officer provides oversight of UCL activities involving the processing of personal data.
